Description The Health Information Management Technician performs a variety of clerical duties related to the maintenance of accurate and complete patient medical records. Job tasks and responsibilities include:
- Files loose material in both the complete and incomplete medical records.
- Retrieves record requests for internal hospital departments and outside agencies
- Charts dictated reports on in the medical record, both inpatient and outpatient. Charts dictated reports on in-house patients when needed.
- Greets visitors and takes appropriate steps to ensure requests are met or directs the person to the appropriate personnel within the department.
- Answers the phone and helps customers with their needs or routes calls to the appropriate personnel within the department.
- Provides non-confidential information to outside requesters such as insurance companies and/or patients.
- Enters and maintains information in the patient documentation system
- Checks records in and out of the department.
- Retrieves requests for medical records from previous visits for the nursing units and delivers records to the Emergency Room and other areas as needed.
- Keeps required statistics.
